Florida has a diverse assortment of birds. Some live in the state year round. Some are just passing through while migrating north or south. Some come here for the winter to avoid the cold weather up north.
This photo album has examples of many of the birds seen in the Sunshine State, especially in west central Florida. To see more about a particular bird, click on its name in the list on the right. Check this list often. New birds and images will be added.
When viewing the bird pages, keep in mind that a bird might have different coloring at different times of the year, or at different stages in its life. Young birds often have plumage that blends in with natural surroundings. Adolescent birds usually look similar to the adults, but do not quite have all the adult characteristics yet. When birds reach adulthood, males and females sometimes look different. The males are often more colorful. Finally, during breeding season, birds often have special coloring and/or plumes intended to attract the opposite sex. We have tried to include these variations on each of our individual bird pages.
